Large protest against Henoko plan to be staged in Naha

Prefectural Assembly members, representatives of local businesses and civic groups opposing the construction of a replacement facility to MCAS Futenma in Henoko spoke to media in Naha, on Apr. 30th, to announce a plan to organize a large scale of protest rally in Naha on May 17th.

Organizers of the rally expect more than 30,000 people to attend the rally that takes place on Okinawa Cellular Stadium Naha in Onoyama, Naha, from 1 p.m.

Governor Takeshi Onaga is scheduled to participate in the rally. Co-leaders of the organizer group said that, after the rally in Naha, they are planning to go to protest outside of the office of the Prime Minister in Tokyo, and also organize a protest by surrounding the Diet building with a human circle from May 24th to 26th. After the rallies in Tokyo, they will send representatives to the United States for protest activities there.

According to the planning committee, as of now, there are five diet lawmakers, 24 prefectural assembly members and 147 members of municipal assemblies actively participating in the protest group.
