Old female brown bear at Okinawa City zoo dies

An old brown bear named Nana in Okinawa Kodomo-no-Kuni Zoo was found dead in her cage on May 8th.

Officials at the zoo estimated she was 37 years old.  She had been in the zoo for 36 years.

According to experts, an average life expectancy of a brown bear is 20 to 25 years.  Nana lived much longer than the average, and had attracted visitors for a long time.

    Captive for 36 years… in that small cell that I saw when I went there… So sad. The poor bear have come so far and gone nowhere, and have lived so long and hardly at all.
