Over 1,500 new HIV cases diagnosed in 2014

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced on May 27th that 1,546 persons in the nation had been diagnosed HIV positive in 2014, which is the third highest number ever.

Over the past few years, the number of people diagnosed HIV positive has grown by more than 1,500 per year. About 80 % of all the new cases are reported in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. The number of HIV cases in the Kyushu district has increased for two consecutive years.

However, Okinawa reports the highest number of new HIV cases in the country per 100,000 of population.
