A young Naha man drowned in Ie River in Sozu, Kunigami Village, May 19th.

According to Nago Police, 21-year-old Kouki Kokuba had gone to an outing to the river with a few friends Tuesday morning, when the friends suddenly noticed he had disappeared. They searched the river at the area where they had last seen him wading in, and found him on the bottom, pulled him on the river bank and called the emergency number for a rescue team.

Kokuba was in cardiac and respiratory arrest when the team arrived at the site and took him to a hospital. However, attempts to resuscitate him were not successful, and he was pronounced dead the same afternoon.

Nago Police is investigating the cause of the accident.
