Drunk mini car driver kills one, injures two

A 22-year-old temporary worker hit a street curb and lost control of his mini vehicle Sunday morning at an intersection in front of Kuwae Post Office in Chatan. The car jumped on the sidewalk and ran over three pedestrians, killing one and seriously injuring the others. The car then crashed into a wall of an apartment building near the accident site.

According to Okinawa City Police, the accident occurred about 6 a.m. on Jun. 21st.  The pedestrians, two men and one woman, were walking on the sidewalk. 54-year-old Toshio Yasumura suffered a hard trauma on his head and died later on the same day in a hospital. Of the other two pedestrians, a 40-year-old man suffered a broken hip, and a 41-year old woman had her right leg broken. They were taken to a hospital, but their injuries, although serious, are not life threatening.

Police say, the 22-year-old driver suffered a trauma on his chest, and temporarily lost consciousness.

A police breathalyzer test showed three times the legal limit of alcohol in his breath. Police are investigating him on suspicion of driving under influence and causing the accident leading to death and serious injuries.
