The Prefectural Department of Public Health and Medical Care has designated three private hospitals as regional core hospitals in case of a disaster or major emergency in addition to five prefectural hospitals. The three are Okinawa Red Cross Hospital in Naha, Urasoe Sogo Hospital in Urasoe, and Tomishiro Chuo Hospital in Tomigusuku.

This is the first time for any private hospital to be designated a core hospital on Okinawa.  Such hospitals are required to have a stock of extra water, food and fuel, quake-resistant facility and form a DAMAT, a disaster medical assistance team.

The national government subsidizes the hospitals for the expense for installing a warehouse for goods to stock and work for their seismic strengthening.
