Iriomote Togyo, a local sugar manufacturer with the head office in Urasoe City, announced Jul. 11th that metallic powder has been found attached to their product ‘Brown Sugar Lumps made in Iriomote Island’, causing the company start a voluntary recall of 22,500 packages from local stores.

According to the company investigation, the metallic powder is a mix of copper and zinc. Company officials say, “The powder does not affect human health.”

The recalled products are packages with an expiration date between Oct. 4 and Dec. 5, 2016. It had shipped a total of 800 fifteen-kilogram cases of the product that are intended for professional use.

The company has apologized for causing its customers a lot of trouble.
