59 years ago today, a U.S. military fighter jet from Kadena Air Base crashed into the Miyamori Elementary School and residential neighborhood next to the school in former Ishikawa City (current Ishikawa in Uruma City).

As a result of the crash that occurred on June 30, 1959, 12 children including one who died later of injuries suffered in the crash and six residents in the neighborhood were killed. Poor maintenance of the aircraft was blamed for the accident.

A memorial service at Miyamori Elementary School took place Tuesday with family members of the victims and former students attending the ceremony.
