Suga and Onaga hold first ‘intensive’ meeting on Henoko dispute

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga came to Okinawa on Monday, and had a dinner meeting lasting about an hour and half with Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga and Deputy Governor Mitsuo Ageda at a hotel in Naha.

During the discussion, Onaga stated, “It would be difficult to solve specific problems unless the national government understands Okinawa’s soul and thoughts.” For his part, Suga talked about the background of the agreement between the governments of Japan and the U.S. regarding the return of MCAS Futenma. The agreement was originally made 19 years ago. He then asked for the governor’s understanding of the reasoning behind relocating the base to Henoko.

Both agreed to meet again to officially conduct honest and intensive negotiations on the matter Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 12).
