Child pornography possession case handed to prosecutors

Okinawa Prefectural Police and Tomigusuku Police handed Naha District Public Prosecutors Office the case file on a 21-year-old unemployed man on Aug. 1st, who is suspected of violating the Law on Punishable Acts Related to Child Prostitution and Child Pornography.

This is the first case in the country to go to the prosecutors, in which a new amendment in the law is applied. The amendment makes it a punishable offense to just possess child pornography for the purpose of satisfying one’s sexual curiosity. The amendment went into effect on July 15th this year.

The man has reportedly told investigators, “I am interested in children’s bodies,” and acknowledged that he knew that his acts were punishable, and has admitted to the charges.

Investigators say the man had collected full-frontal images of nude foreign girls, 5 to 11 years of age, from websites between winter 2013 and Aug. 2015, and copied and stored them in his smartphone.

According to Prefectural Police, the man was nabbed after they got a phone call reporting that someone was taking pictures of children with a smartphone camera at a pool in Naha in the afternoon of Aug. 13th.
