Costco reported mulling opening store on Okinawa

A U.S. based membership warehouse club Costco that currently operates 24 stores in various parts of Japan, has reportedly made a location survey with the aim of making a foray into Okinawa.

According to Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper, the company has researched areas in the middle and southern parts of the island from Chatan Town to Tomigusuku City for a possible location of their first store on Okinawa. The company has said that they have contacted local municipalities about areas around Naha City and also regarding base land after the land is returned.

Costco Wholesale Japan officials have confirmed to Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper’s inquiry that Okinawa is one of the potential sites for opening a new store, but stressed no details of when and where have been decided this time.
