Onna fisherman found dead

A 59-year-old Onna Village fisherman was found lying three meters under water some 400 meters offshore of Maeganeku Fishing Port in Onna Village, Thursday evening. A rescue team retrieved the man but he was confirmed dead at the scene.

According to Naha Coast Guard, the man had been ‘fu-ka fishing’ alone. So called ‘fu-ka fishing’ is a method local fishermen utilize, in which a compressor on a boat delivers air through a hose to the diving fisherman, who either collects shellfish or uses a spear to catch fish.

When the man was found in the sea, his air hose was not connected. Coast guard investigators believe that he died as a result of an accident or some kind of mistake.
