Mother of newborn found abandoned arrested

Uruma Police arrested Monday a 14-year-old junior high school girl living in the middle part of the island, on suspicion of abandoning a child that she was responsible for protecting. Police arrested the girl after she herself showed up at an Uruma City police station and said she is the mother of a baby girl that was earlier discovered abandoned in a plastic bag at a prefectural housing project parking lot in Uruma City.

According to Prefectural Police, the girl told investigators, “I put the baby in a bag and threw it away.” She has admitted to the charges.

The girl is suspected of abandoning the baby on the property of a prefecture housing project in Gushikawa, Uruma City, between 6:30 a.m. and 2:40 p.m. on Sep. 21st. The girl has told investigators that she could not talk to her mother about her pregnancy, and did not know what to do with the baby.

The girls’ mother is a single parent who lives together with the girl, but had not realized her daughter was pregnant.

According to investigators, the girl delivered the baby in the toilet of her home between midnight and early morning on Sep. 21st, and is believed to have abandoned the baby at the parking lot on the same day. The baby girl had its placenta and umbilical cord still in place, and was naked in a white plastic bag when a local resident found her.

According to the hospital where the baby was taken after she was found, the newborn weighs about 2,800 grams, is 50 cm tall, and healthy without any injuries.

Yeah, with all the depressing news lately, it’s good to see this story at least doesn’t end with any children dying. I feel for the baby girl though. I don’t even want to imagine what growing up knowing your mother left you in a bag to die in a parking lot would be like.
