Artifacts found at Henoko landfill site

Earthen vessels and stone artifacts were reportedly found on the seacoast in Camp Schwab at the location of the planned landfill of the replacement base for MCAS Futenma. Earlier, in February this year, an old ‘Ikari-ishi’ anchor stone was discovered at the same area.

The Nago City Education Committee that has examined the objects is planning to ask the Prefectural Board of Education to certify the area as a heritage site. If the site were recognized as the heritage site, that would potentially influence the relocation work at Henoko, because by law it would become necessary to conduct an archaeological survey in the area before the landfill work could commence.
