Man dies in police custody; sudden illness suspected

A 58-year-old unemployed man with no fixed address died in Naha Police custody on Friday.

According Naha police, the man had been arrested on suspicion of a robbery attempt on Dec. 1st. When the police jail keeper called him for a roll call in the morning of Dec. 4th, he did not get up. Police attempted to resuscitate the man, and he was taken to a hospital in a cardiac and respiratory arrest where he was confirmed dead about an hour later.

According to police officials, the man did not have any visible injuries on his body. They believe the man died of some kind of a sudden illness. An autopsy to determine the cause of his death has been scheduled.
