Okinawa DUI cases show increase

The number of DUI arrests in Okinawa is increasing. According to Prefectural Police, there have been 40 fatal accidents in the prefecture in 2015 as of Dec. 9th and eleven of them were related to drinking and driving, which is three more than the same period in the previous year. That means one in four fatalities was a victim of a DUI accident.

Furthermore, 1,417 people were arrested for DUI this year as of at the end of November, which is an increase of 403 people compared to the same period of last year. In regards of the past decade, the number of fatal accidents related to DUI marked the fourth highest ever this year.

Specifically, Okinawa Prefectural Police officials are concerned about the occurrence of DUI-related serious accidents around this time of a year when people have a lot of chances to take part in year-end drinking parties, so they urge people never to drive after having a drink.
