Season’s first whale spotted off Zamami

A young humpback whale was spotted for the first time this season about four kilometers southwest off Zamami Island around 13:00, Monday.

Whales usually migrate from areas around Aleutean islands and Kamchatka peninsula to Okinawa to mate, give birth and raise their newborns in the waters around Kerama Islands, and return back to north around April.

According to a dive shop owner who spotted the whale and took a picture of it, it was about 10-meter-long young male. He said that it was very energetic jumping lively in the air several times.

Zamami Village Whale Watching Association will start their whale watching tours around 27th this month, and the tours are planned to continue through early in April.
