Collision with police lands pair on motorbike to hospital
A police patrol car collided with a motorcycle on Route 6 in Zakimi, Yomitan Village at 03:15 on Tuesday.
The motorcycle fell down, and a 19-year-old man from Urasoe who had been driving the bike hit his head hard on the ground and was taken unconscious to a hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
An 18-year-old unemployed female from Ginowan who had been riding on the back of the bike also suffered a serious injury breaking her neck.
According to Okinawa Prefectural Police, the couple had been driving along with another motorcycle with two people on. The police patrol noticed that the driver of the other bike did not have a helmet on as required by the law, and started a chase. The 19-year-old tried to obstruct the patrol car by running a red traffic light and meandering in front of it, and when the patrol car tried to pass, it collided with the bike.
The driver that the patrol car was actually chasing ran away from the accident site.
