First international roller derby in Asia to kick off

The Japan Open Roller Derby Tournament 2016 will kick off at Okinawa Prefectural Comprehensive Park Gym in Okinawa City this Friday.

The two-day tournament that runs on Friday and Saturday is the first female international official tournament in Asia with 10 teams from five countries participating in the event. The teams come from Japan, United States, Australia, New Zealand and Denmark.

The tournament doubles as the 1st All Japan Roller Derby Championships setting the stage for the national champion to be decided for the first time. Three teams from Okinawa are scheduled to participate, as the Kokeshi Roller Dolls, Devil Dogs Derby Dames and Okinawa Selection will get in the action.

The Japan Roller Derby Association was launched in 2013, and has so far concentrated on finding and fostering players. Admission to the tournament is free, and the matches will be loaded on YouTube and Nico-nico Internet TV Channel at http://ch.nicovideo.jp.
