Hwy 58 in Makiminato to be closed for bomb disposal

A 5-inch unexploded bomb, apparently from the WWII era, was found at a demolition work site in the Makiminato area on Mar. 23rd. The bomb is scheduled for disposal on May 15th starting from 10:10.

The residential area within the 156-meter radius from the bomb needs to be evacuated, and also includes a part of Hwy 58 that will be closed during the disposal work. 206 houses and 39 offices need to evacuate.

According to Urasoe City officials, a task force will be set up at 09:00 to lead the evacuation of the residents from 09:05. The traffic will be stopped for a maximum of 2 hours and 15 minutes. Cars are not allowed to go through on the highway while the disposal work is in the progress. Those traveling between Naha and northern parts of the island should divert to Hwy 330 or use so called Pipeline Road.

City officials expect the disposal work to cause delays for traffic, but remind the public that safety of residents is priority.
