Koinobori are windsocks colored in the form of a carp, a fish considered exceptionally strong in Japan. In Japanese culture, the carp symbolizes courage and strength because of it is able to swim up a waterfall.

With the Golden Week only a little over a week away, many organizations, businesses and even private households are getting ready to fly the colorful Koinobori streamers at various locations from April through early May in honor of Children’s Day on May 5th. Children’s Day, originally Boys’ Festival, is an event expressing hope that each child in the family would grow up healthy and strong like a wild carp.

Hija River in Kadena Town has long been a site for an annual Koinobori Festival that takes place for the 22nd time. The festival this year takes place at Kadena Town Welfare Center on Apr. 24. The festival will feature live performances and shows especially geared for children and several workshops.
