The Universal Studios Japan Co., the operator of the USJ theme park in Osaka, officially reported to Okinawa Prefecture and Japanese government on Wednesday that is has cancelled the project to build a new USJ theme park in Okinawa.

USJ Co. CEO Jean Louis Bonnier informed the Prime Minister’s Office of the company’s decision Wednesday morning and later the same day came to Naha to meet Vice Governor Mitsuo Ageda to explain the cancellation.

Bonnier explained that the parent company of the USJ Co. changed last November when a U.S. media company Comcast Corp. acquired the Japanese theme park operator, and the project was subsequently readjusted. Instead of building a second theme park in Japan, the company decided to concentrate its investments in developing further the existing theme park in Osaka.

After meeting Bonnier in a Naha hotel, Vice Governor Ageda expressed his disappointment. “It’s very regrettable to hear the project has been cancelled. We thought the project would have been a big boost to the tourism business in Okinawa, development of the region and overall improvement of Okinawa brand.” Ageda said.
