Multipurpose arena plan for Okinawa City unveiled

Okinawa City Mayor Sachiyo Kuwae unveiled Tuesday a master plan for a new multipurpose arena in the city.

The planned construction site for the arena was unveiled earlier this year. The Okinawa City bullfighting ring next to Koza Sports Park now occupies the site, and the city is scheduled to start to demolish the existing structure within fiscal 2017.

The five-story arena will have a capacity of 10,000 people and have parking for 1,000 cars. The arena is scheduled to open in 2020. The master plan will be posted on Okinawa City homepage at the end of July.

In addition to becoming the home court of the Ryukyu Golden Kings pro-basketball team, the facility will also host a variety of other events. City officials anticipate the theater to become the center of entertainment in Okinawa City.
