JASDF F-15 blocks runway, delays fights at Naha Airport
A brake system failure caused a Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) F-15 fighter jet to become stuck on a taxiway at Naha Airport just as it was about to turn onto the runway for a take-off.
The mishap occurred Wednesday afternoon, and resulted in the runway being closed for about 45 minutes while the JASDF maintenance crew towed the fighter away.
According to JASDF Naha Air Base, because of the incident, nine domestic flights were cancelled and two were returned. Two international and six domestic flights had to change their destination. A total in 56 flights were delayed up to 2 hours and 46 minutes.
Officials at the JASDF Naha Air Base say they are investigating the cause of the incident and have issued an apology, saying “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience to travelers we have caused.”
