School excursions to Okinawa decrease 3%

According to a survey by the Okinawa Prefecture Department of Culture, Tourism and Sports covering travel agencies that arrange school excursions to the prefecture, the number of schools that had their students visiting Okinawa decreased last year to 2,473 that is 3.2% less than a year before.

Department officials speculate the decrease might be due to the declining national birth rate and resulting decrease in the number of students, the consumption tax hike, and revised rates of discount flight ticket prices.

Students from Tokyo were the most numerous, followed by Osaka, Kanagawa, and Saitama. Most of the student groups stayed 3 or 2 nights.
