Heavy rain in Naha causes road collapse

Last week typhoon No.13 passed Okinawa without much effect, and continued to mainland Japan. But, although the winds here did not reach typhoon strength, the state of air became unstable and heavy rains fell over Okinawa Island Wednesday.

The rains caused a part of a city road in Sueyoshi Town, Shuri, to collapse, and Okinawa Metrological Observatory and Okinawa Prefecture issued a warning on mudslides in Nanjo City and Yaese Town Wednesday evening.

According to the Metrological Observatory about 44 millimeters per hour rain fell on the southern parts of the island before 3:42 a.m. A total of 193.5 mm of rain fell on Itokazu, in Tamagusuku, Nanjo City. Nanjo City, by 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Nanjo City announced evacuation preparation warning, and encouraged elderly and physically challenged people to evacuate to prepared shelters in city office buildings in Ozato and Tamagusuku. By 8:30 p.m., one family with four members had sought shelter at the Ozato office.

The precipitation on Wednesday was 213.5 millimeters in Gusukube, Miyakojima City, 150 millimeters in Naha, and 102 millimeters in Okinawa City.
