Lightning causes power failure in Yaeyama area

An apparent lightning strike caused a power outage on Thursday in all areas of Yaeyama islands, except on Yonaguni and Hateruma.

Officials at the Okinawa Electric Power Co. said the lightning struck a main power line at the second power Ishigaki plant in Ohama, Ishigaki City, about 09:00 Thursday morning.

According to the Okinawa Electric Power Co., up to 22,521 households were blacked out, and all of them had the power back by noon, three hours after it started. The power outage caused limited trouble for area service industries, as well as for local elementary and junior high schools.

According to the Yaeyama Branch Office of the Okinawa Electric Power Co., the thunderbolt hit close to a main power transmission wire, which overloaded the system, and triggered an automatic shutdown of all four power generators on the power plant.
