Okinawa Police arrested Monday an American civilian contractor on suspicion of driving under influence in Chatan.

According to Okinawa City Police, 28-year-old Anthony Scott Pamelinky, a contractor working for the U.S. Air Force, was stopped on a city road in Chatan after a police patrol noticed him driving erratically. A breathalyzer test showed that he had three to four times the legal limit of alcohol in his breath, and he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to police, Pamelinky first denied the charge, but when further questioned, he admitted to having had drinks and driven the car under the influence.

The Japanese and U.S. governments are in the process of concluding a supplementary agreement within this year to reduce the range of U.S. civilians eligible for SOFA status. Pamelinky is a contract employee of the U.S. Air Force, and there is a possibility that he would be excluded from SOFA status.
