Okinawa dams water levels unusually low
According to Okinawa Prefecture General Bureau, Cabinet Office and Okinawa Enterprise Bureau, water levels at the eleven dams on the island are all under 50% of capacity, as of April 12.
The figure is 18.7 percentage points lower than the average 68.3% at this time of the year, and has fallen below the 50% mark for the first time since May 2009.
Officials at dam management offices say the main factor is much less rainfall compared to an average year.
Kin dam has the lowest ratio of 40% of capacity among all eleven dams.
