Torrential rains hit Okinawa main island from early morning Tuesday due to a seasonal rain front.

According to the Okinawa Meteorological Observatory, 107.5 millimeters rain was recorded in Oku, Kunigami Village, over a period of three hours from 5:50 a.m. that is the most ever in May.

At Futenma Shrine in Ginowan City, a large usukugajumaru, a variety of a banyan tree that was about 10-meter tall and the oldest on the premises of the shrine, fell down because of the rain and wind, and crashed over two cars that were parked on a parking lot below. Nobody was in the cars, and no one was injured.

According to the Meteorological Observatory, the seasonal rain front moved down to the south of Okinawa by Wednesday.

The torrential rains were good news to Okinawa Drought Council that said the water level in the 11 dams managed by the government, prefecture, and private companies in Okinawa recovered to 50.3% of capacity as of midnight on Tuesday, which is the first time the level has exceeded the 50% mark in 35 days since April 10th.
