Fire completely destroys restaurant in Chatan

A fire broke out in a single story wooden building housing a restaurant near Araha Beach in Chatan Thursday afternoon. The 120-square-meter restaurant burned down completely but no one was injured in the fire.

Chatan Nirai Fire Station sent 10 fire engines to the scene, and the fire was put out about 1.5 hours later. Nirai Fire Station and Okinawa Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

According to Okinawa Police, a construction crew was welding the steel roof of the restaurant when the fire occurred, and inspectors suspect that a gas cylinder on the side of the restaurant caught fire from a spark from the welding work.

According to Nirai Fire Defense Headquarters, they received an emergency call from a construction worker saying, “A gas cylinder is on fire.” When the fire started, there were five workers and two customers in the restaurant. They all immediately left the building and no one was injured.
