Although the weather on Okinawa is getting cooler, the season for surfers is still going strong as the fall often mean stronger winds and higher and better waves and Christmas is as good a season to start as any.

Seana Surf in Onna is a shop that has been 10 years in business making it’s uniquely designed custom surfboards and running a surfing school for those who want to get into right start with this exciting sport.

It is located at 1F 167-1 Maeganeku, Onna Village. The shop is open from 9:00 to 18:00 every day.

Surf’s up and invites people to try the ever popular sport this Christmas. Staff at Seana Surf surfing school shows you how.

The pride of the shop is their custom surfboards with a unique definitely Japanese-style designs. Store manager Yoshiaki Yanagida says, “I think there is something in common in Hawaiian and Japanese culture because surfing has become an entrenched sport in Japan. I decided to create something to explain about Japan on surfboards.”

So, he decided to create one, and the Japanese design surfboard brand “和乃風屋” (Wanokazeya) was born.

He currently makes three categories of surfboards with Japanese-style designs; 刀 (sword), 桜 (cherry blossom), and 楽 (easy). Each one has a meaning. First of all, “刀 “ (sword) means ‘katana’ in Japanese. It’s colored black and white, and its sharp shape makes it easy to surf a wave. Its shape resembles a sword as well. “Samurai always needs a sword, the same as a surfer needs his surfboard,” Yanagida says.

“桜” (cherry blossom) is ‘sakura’ in Japanese. “A wave high as reaching up to the heaven comes near the shore and breaks. It’s just one moment, however, it’s a beautiful moment. Many female surfers have told me this, so this design is dedicated to them and it’s popular among women catching waves,” Yanagida explains.

“楽” (raku) means ‘easy’ in Japanese. “From a beginner to the expert, all surfers have playful minds as they enjoy surfing. This “楽” describes ‘Fuhjin’ (wind god) and ‘Raijin’ (thunder god) and Ukiyo-e-style painting on the board. These designs are very popular among tourists,” Yanagida states.

Prices start from ¥54,400 for short size, ¥70,550 for fun size and ¥78,625 for long size boards. Prices also depend on the design. All boards come with leash cord and leash cord case.

The store is currently running a Christmas special with all display surfboards discounted 15% off regular price.

At Seana Surf surfing school, anyone over 10 years of age can try the sport. The cost is ¥8,000 for 150 minutes of training for beginners, and up to ¥14,000 for two-day courses. All the students need to bring swimsuits, flip-flops, and a towel. The school provides shower, insurance, surfing tools and wetsuits. All that is needed to get started is a reservation a day or more before on the shop’s English language website, a visit to the store or a phone call at 098-964-1600 (Yoshi)
