Retired U.S. Marine wins chemical exposure claim

A retired Marine who insisted that he suffered health damage because of exposure to defoliants containing dioxin while stationed on Okinawa between 1972 and 1973 during the Vietnam War, has won his claim against the U.S. Government.

Sources familiar with the matter say the Department of Veterans Affairs has acknowledged that such defoliants were used during the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 1970s had been left in Okinawa. The retired Marine successfully contended he had suffered from malignant lymphoma he said developed after being exposed to defoliants.

The defoliants, he maintained, had adhered to various kinds on military equipment while he was engaged in repairing or cleaning them during his stay in Okinawa.

The U.S. government accepted the Marine’s claim in 2008.
