Kinoshita Circus in its final Okinawa weeks

Majestic just to watch, the white lions of Kinoshita Circus perform their routines in the daily shows through Feb. 3 in Tomigusuku.

Japan’s oldest circus is more than midway through a two-month series of performances under the big top, and tickets are still available for performances in Toyosaki Town in Tomigusuku City.

The Kinoshita Circus is one of the world’s three major circuses, and has been entertaining crowds in Japan since its foundation more than 110 years ago.  Twice daily performances are presented weekdays, and three on Saturdays and Sundays.  Monday through Wednesday the programs are 11 a.m. and 1:40 p.m.  Friday performances are at 1 p.m. and 3:40 p.m., and weekends the shows are at 10:20 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:40 p.m.  The circus is closed on Thursdays.

Spectators rave about the savage beast show involving lions.  Eight animals containing a white lion with the beautiful mane of hair, which shines white, sit on predetermined stands awaiting the trainer’s signal.   The lion show is full of surprises, often involving audience participation.

General admission advance tickets are ¥2,400 for adults or ¥2,700 at the door. Kids under 15 pay ¥1,400 for an advance ticket or ¥1,600 for a ticket at the door.  The circus is at Toyosaki Town, 3-35 Toyosaki, in Tomigusuku City.
