Strawberry season: pick your own!

Red and ready! Delicious strawberries are waiting for picking at the Ginoza Village Agricultural Succession Planning Center’s 1,000-meter hot house.

It’s that special time of year when luscious strawberries are ripening beautifully in Okinawa, and the Ginoza Village Agricultural Succession Planning Center wants everyone to come pick them and appreciate the flavor.

The pick-them-yourself sessions are so popular, we’re not even to February but every picking session is already booked.  Reservations will begin for March about February 15th.  For those with approved reservations, picking sessions are 30-minutes-long.  Sessions Monday through Thursday are 10 a.m. ~ noon and 2 p.m. ~ 4 p.m.  On Saturdays, 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. sessions are scheduled. If you are not confident that you can manage the reservation in Japanese, ask someone who speaks the language to help, as there is no one at the center who speaks English.

To pick strawberries, admission is ¥1,200 for high school students and adults.  Elementary and junior high students pay ¥700 and those age 3 ~ kindergarten pay ¥500.  The choice is yours:  pick and eat to your heart’s – and stomach’s – content for a half-hour. But if you want to take some home, you have to pay ¥150 per 100 g extra.  An official of the Ginoza Village Agricultural Succession Planning Center say visitors can see how strawberries are cultivated, as well as how to harvest them.  He promises it is an “all you can eat strawberry farm experience.”

The strawberry season runs through early May.  Strawberries are grown in a 1,000-meter hot house.
