‘Tropical’ defines flower show at Okinawa Zoo

The flowers at Kodomo-no Kuni are arranged to create unique backgrounds for commemoration photos.

The theme of this year’s 4th Okinawa Kodomo-no-Kuni Flower Festival is “tropical”, which may seem a bit strange with this being a sub-tropical island.

It is what it is, though, and in this zoo of a southern island, a little earlier warm spring visit seems in order.  At the Okinawa Zoo and Museum, the hall’s filled with about 30,000 colorful flowers running through March 24th, 9 a.m. ~ 5:30 p.m.  Admission is ¥500 for adults, ¥200 for those 13~18, ¥100 for kids 4~12, and free for those three and under.

The flowers are designed and arranged to delight visitors, with the zoo preparing numerous locations for people to create commemoration photographs.  The spots are scattered around the hall, as organizers say they want visitors to leave with a recorded page of a child’s growth, as well as a family’s recollections of the Okinawa Zoo & Museum.  To further brighten the experience, the zoo is planning related workshops each weekend.

At the main gate, Okinawa Zoo & Museum will give free seedlings to the first 100 visitors from 9:30 a.m. ~ noon on Saturday and Sunday each week.  Opening ceremonies Saturday start at 10 a.m.  The public is invited to participate, and everyone who attends will receive a seedling of a flower and a balloon.
