Cardboard can be art, too

It’s all in the eye of the beholder…

Old cardboard boxes from various places get a new life at D&Department.

An exhibition dedicated to corrugated cardboard, an item normally tossed away after use to become garbage?

Yes, the Corrugated Cardboard Stationary Exhibition at D&Department in Ginowan City is in business, running daily except Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. ~ 7:30 p.m.  It’s different, as creative minds have sought methods for new use of the trash products instead of throwing the cardboard away.

Stationary of “rubodan” leaves pattern designs on notebooks, postcards and stickers, decomposing them and developing new products.  The organizers say they’re made from a simple process called “Simple Paper Made”.  The exhibition showcases stationary made of “rubodan”.  The exhibitions are a nationwide thing, and not something unique to Okinawa.

D&Department is a project focusing on “the view from the stores” in the Japanese design market.  Branches are now in Osaka, Tokyo and Sapporo.  Each has a variety of products, which show new visions in design.  The D&Department is located near Camp Foster, on the second floor of the same building as Café Unizon.
