Sea Farming Center offers family fun

Visitors to last year’s event take part in feeding the fish that is grown in floating cages.

A visit to the Okinawa Prefecture Sea Farming Center is unique, and this week’s special opening to the general public is an event for both adults and kids.

The Saturday open house runs from 10 a.m. ~ 3 p.m. at the Center, located at Ohama, in Motobu, across from the Motobu Police Station.  It’s free, and parking is available.

Displays on shore area explain fish farming methods.

The Okinawa Prefecture Sea Farming Center is celebrating its 30th anniversary, opening to the public and offering a variety of events and activities for visitors of all ages. For example, for kids there will be a fish catching event, but without a fishing pole!

For another adventure, visitors can experience catching giant clams.  Of course, the clams will have to returned, but the catcher will be able to take the shell home.

The bare-hand fish catching is for guests ages 6-12, starting at 11:30 a.m. through 2 p.m. for the first 30 to sign up. Tickets will be handed out an hour before the starting time.  After catching the fish, the fisherboy/fishergirl will learn to clean the fish with the help of the staff.  The Giant Clam Fishing is a game using a small fishing pole to catch giant clams.

Fish that artificially hatched at the Sea Farming Center facility will be freed out into the ocean.

A facility tour and feeding takes place three times during the event.  A staff member will assist the participating children ages 6-14. The tours and feedings, available for the first 20 to register for each of the three time slots, will receive tickets a half-hour before the event.  Tours and feedings will be at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.

There will be food and beverages available.  In fact, visitors can have a taste of the fish goodies prepared as tempura, right out of the oven.  Sea Farming Center officials promise there will be additional activities taking place for the whole family.
