Uji Zome is a type of fabric, which uses sugarcane-based dye for color. The sugarcane dyeing was first created and instituted in Tomigusuku in 1989, and it is now registered as a special original brand.

It’s creators are teaming with Ryubo Department Store in Naha to teach the public how it is done for a week-long series of seminars that run daily starting 10 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. from Mar. 11 through 17 on the 6th floor of Ryubo Department Store.

The products vary from season to season, as the dye colors change according to the season the sugarcane leaves are cut.  The ‘plus’ to this, producers say, is a very individualized fabric, and two batches are never exactly the same.
