Threads colored using dyes made of sugarcane are only one sample of the products on display and sale at Ryubo from Tue. through Feb. 17.

Uji Zome is a type of fabric, which uses sugarcane-based dye for color. The sugarcane dyeing was first created and instituted in Tomigusuku in 1989, and it is now registered as a special original brand.

It’s creators are teaming with Ryubo Department Store in Naha to teach the public how it is done for a week-long series of seminars that run daily starting 10 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. from Mar. 11 through 17 on the 6^th floor of Ryubo Department Store.

The products vary from season to season, as the dye colors change according to the season the sugarcane leaves are cut.  The ‘plus’ to this, producers say, is a very individualized fabric, and two batches are never exactly the same.

Tiguma is Okinawan dialect meaning skillful hands or precise work. It is also the name of a company that produces items made of sugarcane dyed fabrics, and In this event they will display and offer for sale their latest products.

They have a large variety of products from clothing such as ties, t-shirts, handkerchiefs, wallets to daily use items such as bookmarks, coasters, pen cases, tissue cases and many other products.
