Nanjo offers public chance to admire private gardens

Besides just viewing gardens the event also offers a chance to exchange ideas among garden enthusiasts.

The 11th Open Garden in Nanjo City opens Saturday, giving people a chance to see nearly two dozen private gardens around the city, including container and natural gardens, as well as Japanese style and Bonsai spaces.

15,000 people took the chance to participate last year.

The opportunity runs through April 26th from 10 a.m. ~ 5 p.m.  Passports run ¥500 per person, allowing a visitor to see as many gardens as they’d like, as many times as they want.  Touring the gardens is free for those high school age and younger.  Passport tickets go on sale Saturday at Nanjo Commercial Museum, Nanjo City Hall Ozato and Tamagusuku Branch, Yuinchi Hotel Nanjo, Sugar Hall, Michi-no Eki Nanjo and more.  Details are available in Japanese at: http://okinawa-nanjo.jp/garden/#wrap.

Visitors are reminded there’s no parking for visitors, and they may not pick or damage flowers and trees in the private gardens.  No visitors may enter the homes or use their bathrooms.  Children and pets may not play in the gardens, and trash must not be left in the gardens.

There are bus tours for minimum groups of 20 people or more. For reservations or more information please contact Okinawa Tourist at 050-5533-2525 between 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on weekdays and 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

The “Open Garden” event is one of the biggest regular events in Nanjo City with more than 15,000 people taking time to see the gardens last year.  The Open Garden events take place twice a year in spring and fall.
