Hajime Oshiro, the president of the University of the Ryukyus held a press conference, May 27th to announce that the university is planning to launch three new academic disciplines to teach.  The three are pharmacy, veterinary medicine and brewage courses.

According to Oshiro, the university should take advantage of Okinawa’s unique nature and climate of Okinawa. “It is still one of my ideas that I want to promote, and believe that we have an advantage in the area of utilizing the nature and the subtropical climate of Okinawa. I would welcome opinions of the members of our Advisory Council on this,” Oshiro said.

The University of the Ryukyus Advisory Council that consists of nine outside advisers is scheduled to have a meeting on June 19th in Tokyo.

Regarding the pharmacy course, Oshiro stressed that it’s necessary for Okinawa to develop areas for creating human resources, and studying and producing new medicines should be one of them.  Considering the brewage course, Oshiro said, “Okinawa would have an advantage in the field of zymology, as we could utilize the typical weather in Okinawa.”
