Anpanman has long been one of the most popular anime series in Japan.

An exhibition of the life and works of Takashi Yanase, who’s best known as the creator of the cartoon Anpanman takes place at Urasoe Art Museum starting tomorrow and running through Aug. 9th.

Yanase was not only a cartoon artist but also produced numerous works as a children’s book writer, journal editor, painter and a poet, and played an active role in his art field until he passed away at the age of 94 in 2013. The exhibition introduces his distinctive poetry and heartwarming world through his precious works, like a combination work of ink painting and poem ‘Bokusai-shiga’ along with original illustrations of picture books and a large-scale acrylic painting of Anpanman.

Yanase created Anpanman, for which he is best known, in 1973, and he continued to write and illustrate the series continued until his death in 2013. The animated adaptation of the Anpanman is one of he most popular anime series amongst young children in Japan.

To this day, characters from Anpanman appear on every imaginable merchandize aimed at young children from snack food and clothes to video games and toys. Over 50 million copies of Anpanman books have been sold in Japan since he series started.

The exhibition at Urasoe Art Museum runs from July 3^rd through Aug. 9th daily from 9:30 to 17:00 with the last entry at 16:30. On Fridays the museum closes at 19:00 with the last entry at 18:30. It’s closed on Mondays and except for Jul. 20. The museum is located at 1-9-2 Nakama, Urasoe City.

Admission for adults is ¥800, for junior high and high school age children ¥600, and ¥400 for children from three through elementary school age. Tickets are sold at door.
