Umikaji Terrace opening party was held on Aug. 1st.

Senaga Island, a tiny island connected with the Okinawa main island by a causeway and located just south of the Naha Airport runway, has seen plenty of construction lately.

30 stores dot the hillside.

First, The Ryukyu Onsen Senagajima Hotel was built on top of the hill in the middle of the island. It opened in December 2012. On Aug. 1st, a cluster of more than 30 stores opened on the west coast of the island just down the hill from the hotel. The group of shops, called Umikaji (sea breeze) Terrace sits on 7,000 square meters of land, and features a collection of small restaurants, bars, sundry stores and boutiques.

A specialty is a flight simulator where visitors can sit down and experience how it feels to fly an aircraft without having to be afraid of a crash. Marine activities are available at an adjacent beach including banana boats, snorkeling and diving. All necessary gear is available for rent. Live music and dance shows are performed on an outdoor stage every day weather permitting.

Umikaji Terrace has daily live entertainment weather permitting.

Senaga Island is known for its beautiful sunset views and Umikaji Terrace is a superb place to enjoy them. Senaga Island itself has long been a favorite spot for fans of aircraft as it lies almost below the Naha Airport landing and takeoff path.

Designers of the Umikaji Terrace had in mind a concept of a town by the sea in southern Italy or Greece, a small place with white buildings contracting the emerald green sea and deep blue sky, where people can relax and enjoy a beautiful sunset with good food and a refreshing drink. In the nighttime the area is lit with romantic tiki torches.

Umikaji Terrace is open every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Free parking for up to 700 vehicles is available in the park on the top of the island and also near the entrance. Umikaji Terrace website is at http://www.umikajiterrace.com/
