Hokubu Friends of Miyako Association sponsors a singing contest in Nago.

People whose family roots are on Miyako Island but who have migrated to the northern parts of Okinawa are an active lot. And many of them insist on being romantic, too.

That’s why the Okinawa Hokubu Chiku Miyako Kyouikai (Northern Okinawa Friends of Miyako Association) is organizing the “Nariyama Ayagu” Singing Contest at Nago Public Market on Monday, Sep. 21, which is a national holiday. The contest starts at 6 p.m. and the prizes are awarded at 9 p.m. The Nago Public Market is at https://goo.gl/UlASwr.

Everybody is invited to watch the contest and have a good time. The entrance to the event is free.

The winner of the contest will get a round trip air ticket to Miyako, and the second place earns free use for three days of a Toyota Hybrid car. All participants are treated with beer and awamori, and the same beverages are available for the audience as well, although they have to pay. Okinawan and Miyako-style foods are also on the menu.

This is a small nice party, in which visitors will really enjoy traditional Miyako-style hospitality and friendship, and get to know what Okinawa is all about.
