Ginoza Strawberry Farms is the only place on Okinawa to grow strawberries.

Ginoza Strawberry Farm is known for its strawberry picking event that takes place from March through early May, but now the farm has started offering a novelty variation of the service. They will sell you strawberry seedlings, pot and soil, and even grow the plant until it bears berries, which you then come and pick at your convenience. All you need is to bring gloves.

Ginoza Strawberry Farms provides seedlings, pots and soil, all you have to bring is you and your gloves to start growing your own berries.

The idea is to let people plant their own strawberry plants, and thus learn about growing strawberries. Many people also like to mess around with soil and plants. Of course, people are perfectly welcome to take the plant home and try growing it on their own if they so wish. Or the farm staff will take care of them for about two months that it takes for the berries to grow.

The farm uses a variety called ‘Sachinoka Strawberry’ that is suitable for Okinawa’s warm climate that normal strawberries don’t thrive in. The farm staff explains that the most difficult time to grow the plant are the first two months until the berries grow, and during that time you can let the professionals at the farm watch the plants. When they are ready for picking, you just come and pick your strawberries.

In about two months you can pick your own strawberries.

People wishing to take part in the experience can visit the farm on Saturdays and Sundays between Nov. 14th and Dec. 20th. A visit on weekdays needs a reservation. Planting sessions are held at 10:00 and 14:00 and it takes about an hour.

The cost is ¥900 yen per pot that includes a participation fee ¥300 plus two seedlings, pot and soil. There’s a limit of up to 3 pots per person.
