Ryukyu Symphony Orchestra Concert aims at young audience

The Ryukyu Symphony Orchestra performs in two regular concerts each year.

The Ryukyu Symphony Orchestra is holding a concert specifically aimed at young audience on Friday, Jan. 29th.

Organizers describe the performance as an “informal concert,” at which they would like to see not only many local people but especially children to attend. Unlike most “serious” concerts, parents are welcome to bring even their babies to the concert.

Even the youngest children are welcome to enjoy the concerts at Chatan Nirai Center on Jan. 29th.

Admission to the concert at Chatan Nirai Center Kanai Hall is ¥500 for the daytime concert starting at 14:00 and ¥1,000 for the evening performance starting 19:30, while pre-school age and younger children attend free in both concerts. Doors to Kanai Hall open 30 minutes before the start of the music.

A full symphony orchestra usually consists 50 to 100 members who play string, wind and percussion instruments. However, this concert features only a string quartet of two violins, viola and cello with an addition of contrabass.

Members f the symphony orchestra often perform in smaller ensembles, such as string quartets or chamber orchestras.

The Ryukyu Symphony Orchestra held its first concert in March 2001 at Okinawa Convention Center in Ginowan City. Most of its members are graduates of the Okinawa Prefectural University of Performing Arts. Naoto Otomo, a well-known and active conductor throughout the world is the music advisor for the orchestra.

The orchestra holds two regular concerts every year, and in addition, plays at schools and various events, such as the World Uchinanchu Festival. Members of the orchestra value their relationship with local people, and especially want young people to get acquainted with real classic music through their performances.

The concerts are held at the Kanai Hall at Chatan Nirai Center at 467-1, Kuwae, Chatan Town. Tickets to the concerts are sold at Co-op Apre, or by reservation by phone at 090-9783-7645. The Nirai Center has free parking available in front of the facility.
