Machi Bar Itoman 2016 participants serve se-ika specials
Local restaurants and izakayas in Itoman City are organizing a gourmet event starting this Friday and running through the end of the month called Machi Bar Itoman 2016.
During the event the participating shops serve original dishes cooked using local ingredients, especially diamondback squid called ‘se-ika’ in Okinawa.
The diamondback squid is a large squid that achieves a length of a meter and can weigh up to 30 kg, although average size is about 20 kg. It’s the second largest catch for Okinawan fishermen next to tuna in Okinawa, and fishermen from Itoman City have the largest catch of diamondback squid on the island.
Itoman izakaya pubs and restaurants will make their original se-ika dishes, like Karaage (deep fried Se-Ika) and other novelty creations.
There is a free guidebook listing participating restaurants that is given away at Michi-no-Eki Itoman, Southern Beach Hotel & Resort Okinawa, Itoman City Hall and Nishizaki Gymnasium. About 20 restaurants and izakaya are participating in the event.
