Okinawa youth showcases science prowess at Urasoe exhibition
Okinawa Electric Power Co., Inc. has organized an event for local young people in Okinawa since 1979 to attract young people’s attention and interest to science, and develop science education and foster and contribute to human resources for local industry.
The event, called Okinawa Youth Science Works Exhibition, consists of various free science related events, like local high school science teachers’ experiment shows, science experience classes by the University of the Ryukyus’ Faculty of Science and Technology and the OIST, and a robot competition for junior and high school students.
In addition to hands-on events, there is an animal petting booth of Okinawa Kodomo-no-Kuni Zoo to entertain younger visitors at the event. At the booth, people can touch a variety of animals like snakes, goats, tortoises, rabbits and others.
Visitors to some experiment challenge booths or hands-on classes may need to get a numbered ticket, which are given 30 minutes before the classes start.
The event has a website detailing the schedule in Japanese.
The exhibition takes place on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 13th and 14th from 10:00 to 17:00 at Urasoe Shimin Gymnasium. Organizers advise that parking is limited near the event site. Temporary parking spaces are available at Okinawa Electric Power Plant at Makiminato and Urasoe City Government Office. Free shuttle buses run from both parking areas every 20 to 30 minutes between 9:30 and 18:00.
