Tsugaru-jamisen virtuoso Chikuzan Takahashi and Okinawan sanshin player Yukito Ara will test the limits of music.

Garaman Hall in Ginoza Village Culture Center is one of the most active venues for high class music performances on the island, and often features artists that are not seen anywhere else on the island.

A collaboration concert between Okinawan sanshin player Yukito Ara from Ishigaki Island, and Tsugaru-jamisen (Japanese Shamisen) virtuoso Takahashi Chikuzan II is one of those events, as this is the first time in about 20 years for the two to play together.

Yukito Ara is a well-known musician and sanshin player representing local artists from Okinawa, and has played as a member of such bands as the Parsha Club and Acoustic Parsha.

Takahashi Chikuzan II is a female student of the first Takahashi Chikuzan who was a renowned blind composer and performer of Tsugaru-jamisen born Aomori. After the war Takahashi Chikuzan became the leading player of Tsugaru-jhamisen in Tokyo and made a huge number of recordings in his lifetime. He died in 1998.

Takahashi Chikuzan II took the name of her teacher and has continued to play his mentor’s repertoire in concerts. She has played not only in Japan but also overseas like Washington DC, New York and Paris.

The Okinawan samisen and Tsugaru-jamisen are both string instruments and evolved from the same Chinese original, but they have completely different tone. The two artists will show the audience the possibilities in music.

The concert will take place at Garaman Hall on Saturday, Apr. 16th, starting at 19:00. The doors to the venue open 30 minutes earlier. Tickets to the concert costing ¥3,000 for adults in advance are available at FamilyMart e-plus or by phone at Garaman Hall at 098-983-2613.

Adult tickets at the door are ¥3,500. Student tickets for junior high school through college are ¥1,500, and elementary school student tickets are ¥1,000. All seats are non-reserved and children under six years of age are not permitted.
