As the old saying goes, “We are what we eat!” so it should be obvious that, when you eat healthy, the result is being healthy. That’s the idea behind Karma Organic, a shop specializing in organic foods and especially everything vegan.

Many people ask, “Where can I buy organic products in Okinawa?” Others say, “I’d like to try raw food but I don’t know how to prepare it?” People at a new shop called Karma Organic can answer these questions and supply you with anything organic, and also serve you healthy drinks and salads.

Karma Organic owner Yoshiko Ito used to buy organic products from overseas for herself. One day, she thought that many people might want to try those products she had found so satisfying and healthy, so she started selling them online back in 2009.

However, many of her customers wanted to see those products for real, not on a computer screen. So, in 2012 she opened Karma Organic in Adaniya, Kitanakagusuku.

Karma Organic sells smoothies, drink, shakes, sweets, salads, gluten-free energy drinks, and vegan and raw food products. The newest products on their menu are healthy Kale chips and low calorie chocolate.

Everything is also available to go. A 20% off discount coupon for health drinks is available to customers who download an app “LLMP” from Karma Organic’s website.

For customers who want to detox their bodies or lose weight, there are “Cold Pressed Juice Cleanse Sets” that contain six cups of four kinds of juices to choose from. The set costs ¥5,832 including tax. All sets are made to order that can be made through the shop’s facebook page at least one week in advance. No cancellations and customers must bring their own coolers and ice packs.

Although most of the meals are takeout, the shop has a few seats for customers to have a snack and chat with the store staff.

The shop also organizes free quick lessons for people who don’t know how to cook organic foods. The lessons are held basically once a month. This month, the lesson teaches how to make Quinoa, and it takes place on Sunday, Jul. 24, from 10:30 to 11:00. A reservation on the shop facebook page is necessary. If less than five persons sign up, the lesson may be cancelled. Although the lessons are normally given in Japanese, the staff is ready to answer questions in English.

Regarding the most popular items in the shop, store manager Mai Kinjo says, “Oji berry, olden berry, pink salt, and bee pollen are most popular among our American customers to use in drinks and salads.”

Owner Yoshiko Ito states, “I feel I have more energy after I started eating organic food. I don’t have to eat it every day. However, people have to clean their bodies, especially after eating too much. You don’t have to be a vegan to find something healthy in our shop, so please stop by and see what we have.”

The shop accepts cash in yen only in addition to VISA, MasterCard and American Express credit cards. It’s open from 11:00 to 17:00 from Sunday to Wednesday. The last order for food and drinks is 16:45. For more information visit the shop (Japanese) website.

Karma Organic has been open since 2012, and is located on Route 81 in Kitanakagusuku. The shop has no parking space of its own, but the nearby Wakamatsu Park has free parking.
